What the Experts Say

(Review is of the 2016 vintage.)

It’s matured in both French and American oak though it’s predominantly French. 17 months in oak.

Stern release. Made to cellar. Redcurrant, port wine jelly, blackcurrant and dusty herbs. Feels a bit slight, a bit underpowered. A (slight) trace of bitterness to the aftertaste as well. Clean but just a little curious. Might just be in a flat spot of its development.

88/100 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Our Notes

This silky “Founders Block” beauty hails from what is arguably Australia’s ultimate Cab Sauv region and is made in a classic style, deep red and medium-bodied with subtle French and American oak and notes of blackcurrant, plum, clove and chocolate.

2017’s vintage was a little late, with a cooler growing season and warmer harvest than usual, and both contribute to rich varietal fruit expression.

Winemakers Comments

Compared to recent years, Coonawarra's 2017 vintage was later than usual, with a cool growing season. overall harvest temperatures were slightly warmer than average, producing top quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit expressing excellent varietal and regional characteristics.

About the Winery

While the oldest vines used by Katnook Estate today were planted in 1971, the winery’s rich history extends almost a century before that to winemaker John Riddoch seeing Coonawarra’s potential and producing his first vintage in 1895.

Katnook’s historic “woolshed” barrel room actually began as a winemaking facility; it gained that name when brandy and fortified wines were popular in Australia, hurting the profitability of the powerful low-yield reds Coonawarra is best suited to and seeing the winery converted into a sheep station.

19 crimes

Although the 19 crimes blend is by far my favourite, I was keen to try the whole Red series, The Shiraz was very nice and I would definitely recommend this and the other 19 crimes to anyone 🙃
