What the Experts Say
Adelaide Hills shows potential to be the ‘Brave New Face Of Sauvignon Blanc’ so it’s good to see Golding having a crack at benchmarking Sauvignon Blanc in the region with his yardstick run of wines The Local, The Tourist and The Leap which showcase Adelaide Hills, Marlborough and a blend. Innovative thinking. Onya.
However, this wine, The Local, in isolation, is a disappointment. With Golding’s focus on Sauv Blanc I just expected more. Aromatically the wine is resiny with a slap of VA overriding the citrus and tropicals that take a back seat. The palate is short with a kind of waxy texture dominating the proceedings, and in terms of varietal distinction, well, if you gave me this wine blind and asked me what is it I probably would stumble.
Though there are suggestions as to varietal character they are muted by peripheral distractions, oddities in the wine (lack of balance, green acidity, muted flavour profile, dilution of flavour), and nothing really defines it. In essence, there is no hook or excitement. I think you could drink this easily, but its not shouting out the good stuff or potential that I reckon is there from Golding. Kudos is due for its neat price point and for refreshment factor. That is high. You won’t have a bad day with this wine…
85/100 - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
Our Notes
“The Local”, this one’s called, and whether that’s meant to evoke a venue or a person it’d better evoke a chatty one - from the white-floral nose to the zesty and unexpectedly full-throated body where notes of pineapple and cucumber join the expected gooseberry and the refreshing crisp finish, this isn’t a shy wine. Beautiful pale colour, too.
Winemakers Comments
This wine has a delicate perfume of green apple, lime and passion fruit while on the palate you will find generous notes of crunchy snow pea shoots and lifted tropical fruit flavours. It lingers on the palate and ends with a refreshing dry and chalky finish.
About the Winemaker
Though the Golding family have been active in the world of wine in various capacities for three generations now, it wasn't until 2002 that the Golding Wines brand was launching. Based out of a sandstone cellar door in the Adelaide Hills, the family's deep knowledge of their craft is reflected in the choice to plant a few often-overlooked varietals, dornfelder and savagnin among them.
