Veteran winemaker and Maxwell Wines head Mark Maxwell could never be described as a trendhopper; when convinced, finally, to finance a digital rebranding, he complained he didn't like paying for thing "[he] couldn't see." The recent explosion of Aussie Fiano, though, was too good to pass up, and McLaren Vale's sunny 2021 vintage with cool nights and a few good bursts of rain was perfect for the grape.
While sometimes described as "the Italian Riesling" for its racy acidity and tendency towards slight sweetness, Fiano deserves recognition on its own merits as a mouthwatering and gorgeously textural wine with citrus character, as exhibited here.
