Our Notes
The “Origami” Rosé. Sangiovese and Grenache, vinified sans skins, plus a little Pinot Gris vinified with - it’s a topsy-turvy world the tinkerers at Unico Zelo live in, if the bone-dry pink-orange moggy that’s most recently escaped their barrelhouses is anything to go by.
Hybrid vigour on full display here. Mouthwateringly full-bodied, fresh and mineral, with candied almond joining lemon and melon.
From The Winemaker
We’ve dabbled in rosé in the past, playing around with a multitude of varieties (Nero, Nebbiolo, Barbera, etc.) - never really committing one way or another, despite being the most requested wine style for us to add to our repertoire. (after Pet Nat of course)
But after playing with some of our Polish Hill River Sangiovese - generally destined for Truffle Hound - we, at last, have become enamoured! We’ve then backed it up with some Old Vine Grenache from the Riverland that we’ve admired from afar for many years, finally taking the plunge for rosé, then lifted with a bit of Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris that’s seen a lick of skin contact for that copper hue. In short, this is as Unico as a rosé can be - a blend of our 3 key regions, some beautiful vineyards, in our house style: fresh, vibrant and bone dry.
About the Winery
"Wine for the people", promise Unico Zelo, and their minimal-intervention wines combine Italian styles with Australian regional expertise and a minimal-intervention approach to provide this. Winemakers Brendan and Laura Carter have operated since 2014 out of an Adelaide Hills base.
