What the Experts Say

These Saint & Scholar reds are from the Adelaide Hills but they seem made for people who generally prefer their reds from warmer, richer regions. This pinot shiraz is reductive and warm, its fruit flavours pushes to the outer edges of ripeness. Stewed plums, sweet raspberry, flashes of coal and saltbush, even graphite. There’s a good curve of tannin here but it’s been folded into the wine. There’s plenty to wrap your lips around here.

89/100 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Our Notes

This unusual blend marries classic Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir with a splash of Shiraz to turn things up just a little. More Shiraz pizzazz than Pinot, despite the order of the grapes - plenty of jammy red fruit nicely complementing a good amount of oak.

This one could perhaps be served lightly chilled if you felt so inclined- give the bottle half an hour in the fridge, if you’re Bottle Club, or the tasting tube will only need 15 minutes or so.

Winemakers Comments

The nose comes alive with summer cherries, sarsaparilla and liquorice, with generous amounts of confectionary lolly and clove spice. The attractive strawberry and raspberry hit, balances beautifully with herbaceous stalky notes and plum. Wonderfully complex, ultra-generous and expressively lifted.

Big red fruit flavours of cherry and strawberry, with a dash of sars greet you confidently on the palate. Lovely and rich, the wine shows tonnes of weight in its stature, with an energetic acidity that adds excitement and crunch. Ultra-fine tannins rounds of the mouth feel to this very slurpable and sessionable blend.

A wine built around ‘drink now’ for maximum enjoyment. Pinot Shiraz may seem peculiar, but enjoying the wine with red meat, slow cooked bbq, or even dark chocolate is anything but.

About the Winery

The Saint and the Scholar are winemakers Stephen Dew and Reid Bosward respectively, nicknamed for their friendly and thoughtful dispositions respectively.

The recent establishment of a cellar door at Adelaide Hills fine dining institution Maximillian’s has provided the growing operation with a spectacular public face and the opportunity for all sorts of unusual promotions – Pinot & Pilates is postponed for now, but what an idea!

19 crimes

Although the 19 crimes blend is by far my favourite, I was keen to try the whole Red series, The Shiraz was very nice and I would definitely recommend this and the other 19 crimes to anyone 🙃
